Adverbs- describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. 

Example: Locating the Adverb

The clerk spoke rudely to me. (rudely describes the verb spoke)

Colleen was truly sorry for being rude. (truly describes the adjective sorry)

Next time she spoke very sweetly to me. (very describes the adverb sweetly) 

Adverbs usually answer the questions:

When?

Where?

How?

Why?

Under what condition?

To what degree?

Read the best books first. (Read when?)

Pull gently at a weak rope. (Pull how?) 

When adverbs are used to modify adjectives or other adverbs they intensify or limit the intensity of the word they modify.
