Science Fiction & Fantasy
What is the difference between science fiction and fantasy? It might help to consider an example of a fantasy text you know and a science fiction one-what are the attributes of each?
Science fiction is “a literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background.” Science fiction usually involves technology and especially possible technology of the future, like Star Trek and Star Wars, X-Men and The Matrix.
Fantasy stories are more unrealistic, imaginative, and have mystical settings. And like I said in my other post, characters in fantasy stories have magic and mystical powers; they can fly, and put spells on people and do things like that. I think of stories like Harry Potter and Eragon when I think of fantasy. I think of witches riding on horses and unicorns, wearing capes and heading toward some kind of tower or castle. They have adventures with the darker side of things.
